Since her landmark victory at the 74th ARD International Music Competition in Munich, pianist Liya Wang has emerged as one of the most compelling young pianists of her generation. In 2025, she won First Prize in the piano category, becoming the first pianist from mainland China ever to receive the competition’s top piano honour. She was also awarded the Audience Prize and several special prizes, marking a historic achievement in the competition’s seventy-three-year history.

Following her performance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Süddeutsche Zeitung praised her “extraordinary composure, precision, and beautifully singing touch,” noting her ability to “make even the densest virtuosic textures sing.” The German classical music magazine concerti described her playing as “immensely controlled, yet never cold,” highlighting the combination of crystalline brilliance and tender warmth in her interpretations.

Wang began playing the piano at the age of four. At nine, she entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she studied with Professor Chen Manchun; she later also pursued organ studies with Professor Shen Fanxiu. This dual background has shaped her distinctive sense of structure, sonority, and architectural imagination, allowing her to approach the piano with an unusually broad palette of colours.

Wang has performed across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. She has appeared with orchestras including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Nationaltheater Mannheim Orchestra, the China National Symphony Orchestra, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the China NCPA Orchestra, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, and Collegium Musicum Basel. Her recital appearances have taken her to major venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Forbidden City Concert Hall, and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

In the coming seasons, Wang’s European recital engagements include appearances in Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Hanover, in concert series associated with the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, and NDR Hannover. She will also give a solo recital at the Teatro Solís in Montevideo, Uruguay.

She is currently completing her Master’s degree in piano at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Her current recital repertoire centres on Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Ravel, Scriabin, Albéniz, Ginastera, and Liszt.
